“The Thing They Don’t Tell You About Girls”

Background:
Jim White introduced me to his friend Sylvie Simmons. I remember her as one of the many guitar players (and ukulele players) in Jim’s video, and I knew her name from her career as a top rock journalist.

Sylvie wanted a video to promote a track of her new album Blue on Blue, but making a video during a pandemic seemed reckless and irresponsible. I couldn’t agree more. Still, as her song implies, there is little in this world that will stop a girl.

Unable to film together, I pitched having some cheeky fun with old footage of girls cutting-lose, acting-up, and acting out. Adding the lyrics also led to the decision to play with a triptych layout. It also meant we could play more with juxtaposition between images and words. I think it was Sylvie’s suggestion to add the bouncing ball over the lyrics.
